Born in Leizhou, Guangdong, China, in 1983, Hu Xiangqian graduated from the 5th Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2007. He currently lives and works in Guangzhou.
Actively practicing in the world of contemporary performance art, Hu persistently celebrates the idea that one can only discover the unknown reality by frankly experiencing one’s surroundings. His motive purely stems from the desire rooted in his intuition. By transmitting his performance through video, Hu reflects the connection between the body, the performer, and the act of performance inspired by the personal sensation. Leveraged by a high sensitivity to the contradictions and absurdities of life, his work often proficiently emphasizes the various disparities present in our society, magnifying seemingly minor events into social signifiers.
