Research Residency Fellow
The residency will accept around 10 applicants for their on-site participation. NAAA will provide all participants with full on-site and online resource access to NAAA’s collections, and complimentary program materials, accommodation (in Erdaobaihe Town), translation support, local drinks, and supplies, as well as a stipend of $500 for 5 participants – juried by the invited guest participants upon the conclusion of the residency. The participant is responsible for their travel expenses on arrival and departure to the program location, as well as a program fee of $750 and a local courtesy of $480. The local courtesy will directly support and benefit local residents and small businesses, covering all expenses, including but not limited to local transportation, accommodation (outside of Erdaobaihe Town), daily meals, and admissions.

FAQ
Does the program accept applications by collaborations, groups, or organizations?
The program only accepts applications from individuals. Though the individual can be the key figure of an artistic or academic collaboration or a representative affiliated with a research group. Please contact us directly via email if your organization or institution is interested in proposing a collaboration.
Can I only participate on dates of my own choosing during the residency?
No. We expect all participants to be on-site for the full duration of the residency program to cultivate an active mutual learning experience. However, the program is built with free time and flexibility to allow independent exploration. The program may accept slightly late arrivals via prior inquiry.
What are the required forms of participation during the residency?
Accepted participants are expected to actively share their insights and ideas through presentations, seminars, and dialogues as a part of the mutual learning experience during the residency. – The invited guest participants will jury base comprehensively on all of these factors to award the stipend.
Do I need to use a specific language for my presentation or writing?
Presentation and writing must be conducted in Chinese, English, or both.
How many participants will be awarded a stipend for Changbai Spring 2026?
Five participants will be awarded a stipend of $500 each. If the final accepted and arrived participants are fewer than or more than 10 people, NAAA will work with the jury to decide on the subtraction or addition of the number of stipends to ensure a fair and balanced acknowledgment.
How is the stipend distributed?
The stipend is distributed as a $500 refund of the program fee, processed after the conclusion of the residency.
Does NAAA support visa applications?
No. All participants are responsible for ensuring they have a valid visa or entry permission to visit China, as well as any required application fees. Please refer to our General Participation Guidelines for International Participants for more information.
During the residency, are participants allowed to bring family or other guests?
Please inquire in advance for permissions. Due to limited program capacity, one extra family member or guest of the participant may be permitted to join. If the permission is granted, the participant is responsible for the well-being, safety, and all expenses of their guest.
