Yu Guangyi (1961- ) born in the forested area of Wuchang (Heilongjiang, China), began his career as a filmmaker in 2004 by documenting the twilight of the century-old timber felling in his hometown forest (Timber Gan / Mu Bang, 2006). He has since made Survival Song / Xiao Li Zi (2008), Bachelor Mountain / Guang Gun (2011), and Immortals in the Village / Tiao Da Shen (2017), turning his lens toward the emotions and destinies of ordinary people, amid the northern permafrost culture and the social transformations surrounding them.

His works have been screened and awarded worldwide, including the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2009 47th Vienna International Film Festival (Vienna, Austria), Grand Prix at the 2009 9th International Documentary Film Festival Flahertiana (Perm, Russia), Special Jury Prize at the 2007 8th TOKYO FILMeX (Tokyo, Japan), Best Documentary Humanitarian Award at the 2009 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival (Hong Kong, China), and the Jury Award at the 2008 5th Dubai International Film Festival (Dubai, Emirates), among many others.

Yu studied Printmaking at the China Academy of Art in 1990. He currently works as a director and screenwriter and lives in Daqing, Heilongjiang.
